Chapter 24

that afternoon

Rafe finished stuffing his dirty shirts and underwear into his backpack. He thought about when he had left this same room so many years before. He wasn’t carrying much more then than he was now. But maybe he should plan on keeping in better touch from now on.

With one last glance around the room, he slowly closed the door behind him and walked down the hallway. It had an air of being deserted, despite the fact that his mother, father, and Tabitha still lived there.

Walking down the stairs, he could hear quiet movement in the kitchen. Jaira was undoubtedly trying to clean up. He was ready to leave, to get back home and to MJ, and he didn’t feel like getting into a drawn-out conversation with Jaira, so he took a seat on the overstuffed couch. Looking over to his left was Gammy’s rosewood chair, the same chair from which she stood sentinel on the family for so many years. He shrugged. Now, it was just a chair to him.

He checked his watch. Tabitha was probably going to run late. She had left with some friends to visit Gammy’s grave. “I know you and mom had issues since, well, you know, but she still loved you. She just had a way about her, and she was very traditional, you know. But she would have been happy that you came home for this.”

Rafe didn’t say anything. He doubted very much that his grandmother would have wanted him there, but he came for his mother, his father, and of course, for Tabitha. Not for his Gammy. It just wasn’t worth it to take issue with his mother’s view. He accepted her arm as it came around his. They sat there in silence, a grieving mother and her supporting son. He heard a soft sniffle and looked down to see the tears had started again, making new tracks of eyeliner coming down her cheeks.

They sat there in silence for a few minutes, the only sounds being the quiet clatter of dishes being put away in the kitchen and the soft ticking of the old grandfather clock in the entranceway. Rafe knew
